??? Buzzing noise ???

I bought the car in November of last year. In December, I could hear a buzzing sound coming from the gas tank area. I asked a few people about it. The previous owner, my boss, and a mechanic all said it was problably the fuel pump. However, the mechanic said if it starts buzzing, after the next time you fill up with gas it will die on me. He said the cold fuel will cause the hot fuel pump to die (or something like that). Anyway, 11 months later, and 35 tank refills, it is still buzzing. I am unsure what to do about this. Has anybody had a problem like this? Should I just spend the $350 to replace it? Thank you for taking the time to read this thread and for any information you can supply to me.

The fuel pump is an electric motor and the buzzing may be normal. I can hear mine. If it's lasted 11 months then I'd think it's OK. You may need to replace your mechanic though...

If anything, the topped off tank will immerse the fuel pump with gas and it will last longer because it will run cooler. Running cool will never make your car die. A buzzing sound lets you know the pump is working. It is a normal thing with the key on.

So if I replace it, the new one will buzz also, right? Do all escorts have a buzzing fuel pump. The buzz is about the same amount of decibels (sound volume) as the engine.

In light of what you have just said, the fuel pump should whirrr for about 3 or 4 seconds after turning on the ignition and then should be quiet. If it continues to "buzz" it may be a bad pump. I don't think it should be as loud as your engine. Escort engines aren't very quiet so I stand corrected to your situation. Thanks for letting me know.

Just the pump at Auto Zone is Master brand for $69.99. One with the hanger and strainer is the Master for $109.99. Their highest priced one is Bosch (complete assembly for $169.97). I'd go with the Master at $69.99. It is super cheap and probably has a good warranty. Replacing the pump is so much labor that you may want to get the best pump you can which would be the Boch or the Venom.. Good luck. Hope you get that obnoxious sound taken care of.
