I have the same problem on my daughter's '95 Protege. The belt I got at NAPA was 35.5/8 " long but I couldn't get the PS pump to move far enough to get this belt on. I went back and got a 36 1/4" belt an installed it. The belt is nice and tight but the power steering is non-existant below 2500 RPM but works fine at 2500 RPM and above.

Did you have any Power Steering problems after bypassing the A/C?

I just got through at AutoZone guessing which belts to fit my Protege. None of what they suggest to me seems to fit at all. Damn their computers, I have a suspicion that the part #s for the Alternator/Water Pump belt and the P/S-A/C belt are reversed in their catalog. It's all I can think of. They even had me second guessing whether I had the 1.5 or the 1.8 Liter.

Anyhow, the belt I am going to use to bypass my A/C is "Duralast" 350K4-4PK0890... I stumbled upon it after they got me to try a belt for the 1.8... Supposedly this fits the Alternator/Water Pump on a 1.8.

I guess I have a limited edition, unknown displacement motor in my Protege. Going to have to reference the VIN.

We'll see how it goes.

I used two 35" belts, one for Power Steering, and the other for Alternator and Water Pump. The only difference I feel with bypassing the A/C is slightly crisper throttle response.

With a 1.5 Liter under the hood, maybe that translates to .5 MPG better mileage... Whatever, I'll take it.

Just recharge the A/C and re-belt it next summer. When I finally get to the Water Pump swap.
