If there is a local builder that comes highly recommend I would give tham a call and see how much they charge. They probably see Smallblock Chevy's enough to be able to give you an idea of build cost. Then take that info and compare that to Jegs and Summitracing and see what they want for their crate motors. You may find that you can get a new 350 crate with more power than your 305 for a little more money than the rebuild. You'll probably have a better warranty with the crate as well.
Also I'm leary of "BIG" Builders, I've had problems and so have a few other people that I know. It may cost a few more bucks to have a local guy, as opposed to a "BIG" rebuilder, go over the block but in my experience it's definitely worth it.

Price out a Jasper or Goodwrench motor. Each has good deals on engines all the time.

Drop an lt1 in there. They have good power and are not too bad on gas.

My local guy did a complete rebuld on a Vortec 5.7l for $1500.00. Check out some of yours Chevy's seem to be the easiest engines to rebuild. If you don't want to spend that much money on a car with over 269k try a junkyard motor, they run about $750,00 to 1,000.00
