95 intrepid transmission

95 intrepid trans will not go into overdrive. It gives a couple slips and then just stays in 3rd. It is shifting hard into second, no clunking sound just a hard push. Then it will end up dropping back down to second after a couple miles and staying there which I assume that is the Limp home mode. When I drive it in 3rd only it still has the hard shifting feeling and then eventually drops to the limp mode. Could this be a sensor problem?

that or it could be the inevitable solenoid pack failure.

What would you recommend I try first? It looks like there are 2 sensors on the side of the trans, do I replace both or I guess I should ask, which one do I need to replace

usually if your output speed sensor has gone bad, it won't shift out of second gear and your speedometer won't work. I'd suggest going to a transmission shop and see if they can test your solenoid pack and the outspeed sensor (in addition to the input speed sensor) and make sure that a) there are no trouble codes and b) everything is operating normally.

Local Trans Mechanic tested and told me it was an internal error and that it would have to be replaced or rebuilt. He does not work on Dodge transmissions he only tested as a favor (friend of a friend). Just from reading a lot of different things on the Dodges and differences in the transmission, Should I take it for a second test before i do anything or by the tests they run are they acurate enough to go with it needing rebuilt.

the internal error could mean a problem with either the solenoid pack or a hardware problem from the TCM. I'm not putting past the fact that a rebuild could be possible but from the facts that you're presenting, it sounds like an electronic problem. I'd get a second opinion before having to shell out $1500-$2000 for a rebuild and that not fixing the problem 100%. Go to a Dodge dealer and have them flash program your TCM. In addition ask them to give you the CVI (clucth volume index) values of the clutch packs as well as having them to test the solenoid packs. The CVI will tell the technician whether or not the transmission is in need of a rebuild or is ok and has an electronic/software problem.
