drum to disk conversion

has anyone tried to convert the drum brakes over to disk brakes?

yes I hav tucker. they sell a convertion kit at several auto parts stores. its not cheap. and isnt that easy.

xeroinfinity, couldn't you just get yard parts, since they offer the disc in the back on the GT's? Or is there something that im missing? Second do you have to do anything with the anti-lock brakes? I have a 95 grand am se 2.3l quad 4, seems like it should be a bolt up conversion + brake lines. I too have often considered looking into it, but need new tires before it would do me any good.

I guess TuckerR1980 didnt say what year, the kits i've seen are for 99+. i think it was the zone or advance auto parts that has a disc rotor kit for the rear. the 01 GA SE i had a few weeks back had disc brakes all around. i thought its around $400.

Converting to rear disc on a 92-98 involves more than just bolting parts on. You have issues with the abs module as well seeing as how disc grabs much faster than drum brakes. Personally, I'd leave a pre-98 as drum brakes in the rear unless you want to spend alot of time messing with the abs.

Thanks skibum1111, figured there was more to it then just bolting on parts, but I didn't know for sure what else was involved. Thanks again for the advise.

its a 2001 grand am SE 3.4 HO. I thought about the grand am gt but still not sure how difficult the conversion would be. I've seen the kits at different websites but nothing explains the procedure to much so i wasnt sure as to how difficult it would be.

it involves everything removed down to the spindles. remove drum back plate. a weekend(2 day) job if you dont hav the proper tools. the conversions I've seen are $340 for each side. it comes with everthing you need(maybe not pads).

did you find it worth the money and hassle xero?

i never changed my drum to disc. If I had a donor car with disc brakes on the rear I'd probley swap out my drums. But not for $600-700. I think it does improve stopping though, with a 4 discs. The 01' GA I sold a couple week ago stoped better than my 99'(w/drums in rear).
