Anyone Got a Clue About my Srating Problem?

Awseome forum, glad I found it and alreday got a ton of usefull info. I have a problem with my 1996 I30 and hope someone can help...

Just recently ive noticed strarting problems. First couple times it would take my car a few turns of the key to start it (each time hearing a split second "screech" as it started but I had the serpentine belt replaced very, very recently so couldn't be that).

One day it wouldnt start EVEN THOUGH my lights and everything esle worked fine. I had a friend jump me and it worked fine (which confused the heck out of me since the battery wasn't bad). I felt like just to be safe getting a new battery and I did.

Now I got a new battery in there and guess what? Car has stopped starting as of a couple days ago. In fact, the day I had it jumped it ran fine thru the next day where I ran some errands but the following day no startup luck.

Now everytime I turn the key to start it I hear some weird sounds but no start?? I don't hear any "clicking sounds" but more like the electronics doing their thing.

What could it be? The most recent work I had done was a brand new serpentine belt and some brake stuff. Could it be the starter? Could it be the ignition (which I doubt cause when I turn the key everything lights up and is normal...just no start).

Any advise much appreciated!

Thanks

Ray

hello, i`m thinking it might be a bad ground at your starter. clean it up or tighten it down and see it that makes any difference. good luck.

maybe the starter relay or bad solenoid in starter......

try this.... with a friend,
one person turn the key
(if no start) the other person try tapping firmly on the starter with a stick or something
if it starts when you strike it, you probably need a new starter

i drove around in my old pickup with a bad starter for months before i fixed it.....i just gave it a little beatin' and it would start, eventually though, i had to replace the starter because this trick stopped working

...some weird sounds but no start?? ...

U got to invest in 10$ multimeter - at radio shack or wallsmart.

Measure batt voltage, (ask salesman how to use the dmm). Has to be 12.5V or more. Engine running, 13.8V or more. If not, Alt blown.

Dont ever give jump start when u car is running, cables connected. Often Will cause voltage surge burning rectifier diodes in Alt, alt will fail during next half year, spoil also your batt. (hey man, thanks for help?)
HowToDo: Engine off - Disconnect u battery - then u may help the next car. And never connect gnd cable from batt to batt, but from helper batt to chassis. (this way only your batt will be killed, alt is saved...)

If supply side is ok, then its the already suggested starter or wiring. Nissans typically have a rotting gnd wire & chassis contact under batt tray... see: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/748507/10

Problem source: My bet is on NO charge = alt & wiring:
