Driver side window this morning was acting goofy.
Switch produced no response at first, t hen a little response which allowed window to go into autodown. However, either there is an issue with the window itself or the relay switch as the window will not run back up.
Passenger side window works fine.
It wouldn't be that big of an issue if the window wasn't stuck down. Oh well.
Now it's sitting in a "secured garage" as they advertise here on campus. Hope any potential thieves don't know where the trunk button is let alone how to get into the backseat :).
I am starting to regret taking these tutoring jobs that take up my mornings.

After further reading I am determining it is more than likely the switch.
I could get slight movement on my last attempt to roll the window up.
However, I will have to check it out. It just HAD to happen on the day that I am busy.

which window is the problem? you said the passenger window was acting goofy, then said the passenger window is working fine. I assume since you said it went down automatically, then the drivers side is the problem.

What year is your car and is it a 2-door or 4-door?

the window switch is GM part #10404698 and fits 97-00 models. The part is dealer only and runs $84.89 retail. The window regulator is part #10309980 and would run you $176.99 + s/h and I stock that part. I could get you the switch also for about $65 + s/h if you didn't want to go junk-yarding.

I'm unfortunately going to have to go stealer for parts on this one. If the window was stuck up, it would be no issue.
But I cart around expensive textbooks and I go to a large University so I have to keep things secured and can't wait.
Thanks though for the part numbers.

You know what it was?
The Driver Side switch came disconnected somehow. Reconnected unit and works fine.
Didn't have to spend $ on parts, problem got fixed. Can't complain about that.

I think what caused the switch to come loose was that the previous owner somehow got in there becuase one of the clips to the plastic piece that sits around all the toggle switches as part of the arm rest was broken.
This allows me to move that piece around unlike the passenger side which sits snug and won't move.
Could anyone help me in finding a part number for that?
If you need clarification, I will take a picture tonight.

I believe the bezel around the switch is what you are asking for. The GM part number is 10420344 for a two door and comes in Graphite(gray) only. Dealer retail is $13.35.

watch the shipping charges from gmpartsdirect.com, as they are rediculously high most of the time.

I just checked, S/H is $9.95 from them, so you'd pay $18 for a $13 part.

The price sounds good from them, but they get you on the shipping charges. They gotta make their money somehow, they sell at Dealer cost.

i got a little bit of a window issue too, my windows go up really slow, and sometimes they go so slow they stop half way and i have to help it go up the rest of the way, how would i make it so it glides up and down faster and smoother? do i have to lube up the track and gears or something??? i dont want to risk burning out the motor, i know those can be very costly, or is the motor itself?
richtazz

It's probably the motor, but you can try lubricating the cables to see if that helps.

alright ill try that, i noticed too that if the car is turned on (engine and all) the windows go up faster, but with the ignition key just turned to "ON" and the engine not running, then they will go up slower.

I bought the part, now my inability to figure out mechanical things sometimes is blocking me. Now do the parts containing the switches just pop straight out, or do I need to push a clip or something?
Okay, here is the new part

Here is how the current part sits in the car. See how the clip at the top came off causing the whole bezel to move around which could more than likely cause the switch to disconnect?

If you lightly pry on the tabs on the bezel, the switches will pop out. Unplug them first of course.

Granted I attempted this by flashlight at first, but I am having a hell of a time disconnecting the switches.
I tried simply unplugging them by yanking with no result. I pried my pocket knife gently in the window switch and unplugged that one. The door lock I tried pushing the two plastic clip looking things at the top by the wiring and I tried prying my knife into different spots on the side, even chipping a little plastic off (oops!).
I gave up and plugged it back in with everything still working :).
If I could have some guidance on how to unplug these bastards, it would be much appreciated. Then when popping the switches out, I just gently pry something into the clips at the base of the bezel and they should just pop out 1/4 at a time right?
Sorry, I learn best by example and it's hard to go off of message boards.
Thanks again.
