1997 Sahara Brakes question.

Hi all! Just replaced back brakes (drum) about 2 months ago and have noticed a wierd sound from the back end during braking. Sounds like a squiggling sound, like a rock in the rotor sound when applying the brakes at slow speeds (3-5 mph) could this be brake dust causing it? The brakes seem to work fine other than being alittle grabby and a slight pull to the left under heavy braking. Thanks for any info. GJ10

I'd pull the drums and have a look. Possible that one of the hold down springs have popped loose or maybe a return or selfadjuster spring.

A hold down spring that has come off will let the shoe tip out from the backing plate and jam causing the brake to grab/lockup and giv you a pull.

If it is a spring that is off, bite the bullet and get a new hardware/spring kit and install it on both sides. Likely cost less than $20.

Just wanted to thank JD again. Because I couldn't tell which side the noise was coming from I pulled the passenger side drum off first. No problems there. Should have know I had a 50/50 shot and missed it. Drivers side drum wouldn't come off, even after bleeding. i had to pound it off with a mallot. After I got it off the return spring by the adjuster fell into the bucket I had to catch brake fluid. One of the ends had broken off and the adjuster was out several turns causing the bottoms of the brake pads to drag on the inside of the drum. I think about a half cup of brake dust came out of the drum. I don't know if it was due to the dragging of the brake or the small piece of spring that may have went between the pad and drum but the rear pad was craked from top to bottom. Spring kit for rear $10 and new back brakes $20. Now my brakes are quiet and not grabby at all. Thanks Again for the info JD. You were right on with your diagnosis. GJ10
