HELP** to BUY '00-02 S500 AMG

I am strongly considering purchasing a 2000, 2001, or 2002 S500 AMG Sports Sedan. I have been hearing that this model provides far too many problems, but i'm still going to pick it up... Does anyone kow what kinda issues it has? i'm looking at cars with regular milleage.

hows the fuel economy? [true miles/gallon or km/litre]
this would be my first benz and i currently drive an accord.. i want to make the jump to luxury, but i need some help..
