I have a b16 set up with a decent amount of mods. Most of the parts under the hood have been replaced. For some reason i am still getting sputtering until the car hits 4000 rpm and vtec kicks in. I'm thinking my air/fuel ratio is off and i'm gonna change my air intake and fuel pump. Currently i have an aerospeed intake and a stock fuel pump on my 90 hatch dx. I'm considering getting an aem or injen intake and upgrading my fuel pump. Can anyone give me some help on why the car might sput-t-er until 4000. Also what are some good intakes and fuel pumps i could look into for the b16?? :screwy:

Yeah, vtec kicks in around 4K. As far as i know, thats normal for a first gen b16. I talked with an acura technician and he said i shouldn't need a fuel pump up grade unless i have an upgraded fuel management system. He also said i could try to get an aftermarket ecu and that might help release fuel more efficiently. I'm gonna get a new intake, K&N, Injen, or Aem, any suggestions?? While thats being replaced the timing will be checked
I've also tried a spoon ecu, car still sputtered, but reved until 8200..Will a modified honda run as smooth as a new honda civic, or am i dreaming??

Sounds like your timing is off, and you shouldnt hit vtec at 4k. .

When should vtec kick in?? Is my timing to high or to low?

it should come on at about 5200 rpm

are you mechanically inclined enough to check your timing? because like all others have said, that is the first thing i would check. either read a manual and do it yourself or pay someone to do it. not only the ignition timing but your cam timing as well

I've seen the timing checked on cars before but i don't know how to do it. I'll have to bring that into the shop. What RPM level should i reccomand v-tec be engaged in?

vtec should engage around 5200, unless your ecu is chipped, but if you are running a stock motor stock engagement is your best bet. some people think that engaging vtec early makes there cars faster, but in all actuallity its making you slower, since your ecu isnt mapped for more air and fuel to make the extra power.

setting timing is really easy dude. all you have to do is take off the upper timing belt cover, set the bottom end to TDC, there is a mark on the lower timing belt cover, and you can put a long screwdriver down into the cylinder, very gently!, and watch until it stops moving at the highest point. then once the bottom end is tdc, look at your cam gears, there are 2 marks on each gear, they should be lined up straight across.

for igntion timing you night a timing light, and you have to jump it into base timing check it, then unjump it, and make sure the timing is correct still. make sure you get the manufactorers specs.
