Hi,
My Rear End on my 1996 Safari is howling and I was wondering if anyone has ever changed out gears to fix this or if I would be better off to just get a salvage yard replacement rear end. Thanks for your time.

Does the noise come and go (hear it on accel or decell) or is it all the time?
You could rebuild the diff, it just takes some skill to get backlash and bearing preload right.
If you get a diff from the salvage yard, you dont know what condition it is in...could be better, could be worse :dunno:

Hey Merlin,
The howling is only occuring during accelleration. It has a slight leak at the front of the rear end...not sure what u call it. Pretty much where the drive shaft attaches to the rear end it is leaking out of that seal, and I think it probably was run for a while with not enough gear oil inside. Not familiar enough with adjusting for backlash...I have that on my tahoe and it drives me nuts. May just try and find a low mileage salvage. Thanks a bunch, brehmster.
