i know someone just posted a similar topic, but i felt that this question deserved its own thread
lately, ive been reading about all these cheap dynamat reaplacements that you can buy at home depot, but i cant find any of the specific products that ive heard about, nor can i find any products that say on them anything about sound deadening. Im just look ing for somthing to buy at home depot to cheaply sound proof my car, know of any products???(please dont say foam peanuts) also, will house insulation (the foil stuff) work at all??

You can get peel and seal from any roofing supply, I got a 18 inch by 34 foot roll for $40. It seems to work pretty well, damn near the same thing as dynamat. It has a aluminum face, other side is this sticky tar.

I did a little write-up on peel & seal and sound deadening a while back. Here's the site:
http://www.cardomain.com/id/turbolaxx

The Peal & Seal works fairly well. I can turn it up quite a bit and let it really thump on the inside of the car. If i get out and shut the door it's really quiet on the outside from what you would expect. It's def the poor man's dynamat. It's only about 1/16" thick but works pretty well. Look in the yellow pages under roofing supply and call them up. PM me know if you have anymore questions about it.

yeah, turbo your the guy who really inspired to me to cheaply dynamat my car, so im been to every home improvment store i know to look for peel and seal, and to look for that carpet stuff you used, but i cant find either and its driving me crazy. All i can find is insulation shit, and im not sure if its the same stuff or not.
Ps. i love your set up turbo, very clean

i got the idea from no one. pretyt much if oyu go cheap well sooner or later youll pay the price. becuase i got 120 square feet of edead v.1 for 130 shipped to my door and that will do your car twice. and well this stuff is actually meant for acoustic use.

i'm all for using stuff that's meant for acoustic use, but i'm cheap and i don't wanna pay for it. I'm happy with mine so that's all that matters.

all sound deadening is the same, it's just freaking tar paper. I was going to do the samething as Turbo, but I'm not keeping this piece of shit car so I'm not gonna put in the hours to put the sound deadner on.

I ended up hitting a junkyard & taking the sound deadening out of other cars. The long door pieces from 70's & 80's GM 2 doors are a nice cut'n'fit for a 2 door/HB/CRX doors, & look in newer luxury cars for other pieces. Total cost was $5.00 - who wants old sound deadening bits?

The door panels were already off at this yard cos they removed them to get the glass out, so little effort on my part needed other than looking around. I stuck the deadening in with contact cement, works well. I also stuck some under the backseat & between the spare tyre & carpet in my HB.

I didn't know what to get so went that route. I had to go to the junkyard anyhow, so why not. Not sure if it works as well, but it seems pretty good so far.

EDIT: I just looked at Turbo's page & I did it slightly differently, sticking the sound deadening onto the plastic panels & door trims themselves rather than metal. Living in a place notorious for rust, I figured the less places to trap moisture the better. Good looking installation there Turbo!

I never thought of recycling sound deadening. Very clever. I bet it works just fine.

Thanks man! I had a ride in a Cadillac & thought about how quiet it was, so figured if I took the sound deadening out of a car like that I might get similar results.

Yeah, it works pretty well, although seeing the use of the peel & stick works makes me tempted to try that as well.
