Acetone in fuel?

Have any of you tried acetone in your fuel? My dad has increased the mileage in his VW by 10 mpg. He is an advocate of it. I am going to try it in my 98 1500 v8 5.9. Any thoughts or observations?

Well I'm not sure about doing this. I've read that you can do this to get better gas mileage but be careful as to the amount you put in your gas tank. There are some websites about this but I cannot tell you what they are. Just type in acetone for gas mileage and see what it brings up. I've looked it up but cannot remember what it said exactly. I've also read that fuel additives have acetone in them.

I tried a 1oz/10gallon mix this weekend in my '00 GC 3.8l. With my wife's usual drive to Portland (21mpg), she got 23mpg. She does not know about me adding acetone to her van (blind test). I will report more results as I get them.

Quite interesting. I'm considering giving it a shot, will report back once have done so.

2nd test '00 GC to portland and back (wife drove) got the usually 21mpg. Unfortunatly she got gas at a place that has 10% Ethanol in the gas to the mileage test is probably not accurate. Although maybe it is, with Ethanol mix it usually gets about 19.

1st Test with '98 Jeep XJ usual 20mpg - Got 22
2nd Test 21
So far a 10% and 5% increase.
Will report 3rd test in about a week.

Thanks Blender, good info on your thread. The gist of what I got everyone was saying was that the acetone was giving everything a good cleaning, and upping the mileage a bit. The mileage gains remained even after the acetone was discontinued.

And of course there's no reason not to get along on something like this. There will always be "eatin ####, crappin ####" bumper stickers, but we can all benefit from a couple MPG in our trucks.

OK, been playing with the Acetone in fuel thing for about a month and a half. It appears that I get about 10% better gas mileage using 1-1.5 oz per ten gallons of gas.
When I tried to use more, the mileage and power started going down. I have noticed that I have more power when the mix is right. The 3.8l engine in the Caravan runs a little smoother, but the 4.0l in my Jeep runs like a totally different engine. The Jeep engine runs so much smoother with acetone, that I was disappointed with it's operation during the no acetone part of the test cycle. Haven't had any problems with either vehicle caused by Acetone. Total miles driven during test cycle, 2500.
Acetone bought 1 quart at a time is about 20 cents an ounce. I put 2 ounces in at every 15 gallon fillup.
I save about $3.60 on gas every fillup and spent about 40 cents on acetone. So I net about $3.20 every fillup. Since we drive about 40,000 miles a year
that could potentially add up to about $400 saved a year on fuel.
