cold start=no idle

1989 Chevy 5.7, auto 2wd. I'll start with the new parts. Fuel filter, rebuilt tbi (old injectors) plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, t-stat, and egr. Purchased truck with all parts installed but the egr. Had rough idle, low speed stumble. Now that temps are falling won't idle after starting. I have to restart it 5 or more times and tap dance on the pedal to keep it running. If I give it roughly quarter or half throttle it stumbles and almost dies while driving. Letting off the gas slowly there is a spot where it will accelerate fine after the stumble. Scan tool gave code 32, egr. Replaced egr valve still have the same problems. Also still gives code 32 once out on the highway. Now won't stay idling long enough to do anything as far as diagnostics. Last time I tried to start it the check gauges light came on showing low oil pressure, usually the gauge stays almost pegged at idle and pegged down the road. New problems added to old. Yay. Other than the code 32 it keeps throwing the diagnostic tool showed everything else as ok. Where do I start???

Forgot to add, the motor is a new GM crate motor with roughly 10,000 miles on it. The truck itself has 170,000. Idle speed fluctuates between 950 and 1025 rpm. Does this seem high? My book doesn't say what idle speed should be and the underhood sticker is gone. I drove this truck from Ok. to Ia. in august and got 19 mpg despite the idle problems. Also it smells of raw fuel after coming down from highway to city driving. The cold start problems were present before egr installation.

OK, truck is running again. Still idles rough and quite high. I regapped the plugs and #8 was wet when I pulled it, the rest were sooty black. The exhaust is rich enough to burn your eyes. At 1000 rpm idle I shifted into reverse, rpm dropped to 800 and almost died, shifted into drive and for the brief moment it was in neutral rpm revved to 1600 and slowly went down in drive. What gives? Any ideas? Scan tool says...
3rd gear SW--on
Air Divert Sol--DIV
Air SW Sol--CONV
Battery--14.0
BLM---128
Clear Flood--off
coolant---235
RPM---bounces 950-1100
Exhaust O2--lean/rich switching
IAC Position 79-82
Integrator--128
Loop Status--closed
Map (v)--1.14-1.20
O2S (mv)--524-568
O2 crosscounts--16,43,71,103,132,160,194,226,253 than cycles again, numbers vary but not far off
TPS sensor--.58

Everything is within parameters in my manual, so why is it running rich?

My 90 Factory Service Manual has 525 in Drive as the programmed idle.

Diagnostics Aids for running rich are:

- Check fuel pressure. should be 9-13 psi
- Check for leaking injectors
- Check the canister for fuel saturation
- Check the Map sensor. Disconnect MAP and see if the rich condition is gone. Replace MAP if the rich condition goes away when disconnected.
- Check fuel pressure regulator for leaking diaphram.
- Check for intermittent TPS output

Okay, I replaced the injectors, tbi to manifold gasket, O2 sensor, and the IAC this weekend. The IAC housing was cracked and injectors were spraying poorly, gasket was just 2 dollars worth of insurance against leaks. The idle smoothed out (not missing)and it does start better but still won't idle down. It still wants to idle at 1000 to 1200 rpm. Any ideas? By the way, I got the injectors for $31 each from Northern Auto parts. Remanufactured, but a decent price.

Did you reset the IAC valve pintle position?

Steps:
1. Depress gas pedal slightly.
2. Start and run engine for 5 seconds.
3. Turn Engine Off for 10 seconds.
4. Restart engine and check for proper idle.

If that does not help, check the TPS voltage. Should be less than .95 volt at idle.

Just an update. Broke down and spent $160 on a new distributor. Dropped it in today.....fired right up and once it was up to temp dropped down to low idle. Starts, idles, and runs like a dream. Now maybe my anger will subside and I'll want to keep this truck again.
