about time to start the project

My camaro has been parked for about 3 weeks due to a broken shifter cable.

Although my Mom's 2000 Buick Regal 3.8L packs quite a bit more punch than my ol 2.8l I really miss my own car.

I finally have a bit of money stored up and am ready to start this project.

Here is what I am thinking-

Rebuilt 2.8L autozone- $1,200
Dynomax Performance Exhaust Summit part 17493- $170
Custom ram air intake $shouldn't be too bad
Also going to patch some trouble areas on the body (2 rusted spots)

Depending on my mood I might get a more preformance oriented camshaft and 160 degree thermostat.

This is going to be a daily driver. I am going to have to take 60 mile trips twice a week. Its all freeway though so I want a bit more power for it.

I do not have the money to put a 350 in it.

you could build a quite strong 350 for less than 1200... just gotta know where to look...

you already have a 60* V6, look into getting a 3.4

He's right. There an LT1 at a local junkyard for $550, complete.

lt1 swap would be intensive

drvngstorm05
10-07-2005, 10:50 AM
or you could sell your car a buy something like this...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevrolet-Camaro-Z28-1986-Chevrolet-Camaro-Z28-w-97-350-LT1-V8-310-H-P_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6161QQitemZ4579281853 QQrdZ1#ebayphotohosting
skip the swap time... but you still have a good platform for mods...

Just giving an example of what certain 350 can go for if you look in the right places. A turbo'd 3.4 would be really nice. Really nice!!

drvngstorm05
10-07-2005, 10:54 AM
would cost alot more... and still wouldn't put out as much as an lt1...

I know, LT1 is GOD!!

3.8 > all

Link85x
10-07-2005, 11:21 AM
Yeah, i kinda forgot about that one. Are they really rated at 505? I read that they actually put out more like 550.

Xenostalgia
10-07-2005, 11:28 AM
I've heard a variety of stories of GM not putting in the true amount but people laying out 510-550 to the wheels after a swap :screwy:

drvngstorm05
10-07-2005, 12:35 PM
for how much an ls7 would cost... i could easily make my lt1 own its ass in every category...

lt1's in third gens are god... here's proof for xeno

10-07-2005, 12:44 PM
kpot is like a little me... LOL looking at that soon list, that's what i'm going to do. i already have the lt1, but i want 3.73's and i'm gonna spray it by summer time (so i can hopefully own john, curtis, geno, and frank if he decides to meet)

if you can have that done by summertime you should come play too

KPot2004
10-07-2005, 12:49 PM
well the lt1 and 3.73's should be done by summer, the NOS is more of a wish thing, probably wont happen anytime soon. if i get a good check on payday, the camaro is going in the garage the same day.

LS7 new in box = 15,000 not a typo

drvngstorm05
10-07-2005, 12:53 PM
i would also strongly recommend the lt4 hotcam... i love it and it makes gobs of power

yea i know... for less than half of an ls7 i could easily make an lt1 run better and stronger than an ls7

But you can't go around with your nuts hanging out saying 'i got an ls7, bow and kiss'

drvngstorm05 how tough was the Lt1 install? Did you have to fabricate your own motor mounts? How did you hook up the exhaust to the manifolds? Im wanting some more power and the L98 bottom end wont support much more than 350 hp. So ive been told.

drvngstorm05
10-07-2005, 12:58 PM
very tru xeno... that you can't... but at the same time you can own a guy with an ls7... and make them kiss your nuts

drvngstorm05
10-07-2005, 01:02 PM
no motor mounts work just fine, but i did use polyurethane mounts just in case. i didn't want to spend all the time on the swap and use the crappy exhaust manifolds, i have shorty slp headers that were meant for a tpi car with a single cat... however your car has dual cats so you would get different headers than that...

if i were to rate the difficulty of the swap, i would say it is a 7 or 8 out of ten... its tedious, and took me a long time, but nothing is impossibly difficult, it well just test your determination, OFTEN

Thats good to hear, Dave. Real good to hear.

KPot2004
10-07-2005, 01:24 PM
i dont think it will be to difficult, the thing i like about this swap is i dont have to have it done. i can see it being a bitch if it was your everyday driver that you had to have done, but i'll have about 8-9 months.

drvngstorm05
10-07-2005, 01:26 PM
lol it took me about 1 week less than an entire year...

but then again, during school i could only really work on it on the weekends so it could be done much faster i'm sure

I can't expect to get much from selling it. Probably $800 tops. As for the lt1 linked to in ebay

this one! (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevrolet-Camaro-Z28-1986-Chevrolet-Camaro-Z28-w-97-350-LT1-V8-310-H-P_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6161QQitemZ4579281853 QQrdZ1#ebayphotohosting)

The top bid is almost $4,000 and the reserve has not yet been met. I was actually hopeing to spend about half that or less.

I think I may have found another car though... lets see if anyone can guess what it is... its a Chevy, of course, its got a v8 though not a lt1, ls1 or 305. It has 2 seats and gets its name from a marine animal.

Hey Kpot, did you get the stuff for your swap? Recieve motor/tranny yet?

KPot2004
10-07-2005, 04:28 PM
no, i have called a few places and in my opinion they wanted to much, the only thing i have bought so far is an energy suspension kit and tranny mount for 82-92 camaro/firebird

What made the swap take so long? Im thinking that i would love to do the swap but this is my daily so I cant put it out for very long. I like the tpi injection its just so restrictive and a super ram plenum is about 800+ dollars. www.lt1intake.com (http://www.lt1intake.com) sells everything needed to put an lt1 intake manifold on a non lt1 motor. It should really open it up. Im just debating on whether I should just keep my motor with 87000 miles for now and build it up a little or start searching for a different block and rebuild. An LT4 motor and t56 sounds pretty friggin awsome but i dont think im up for a swap like that cuz i just dont have the time. Or the money. SOMEBODY BUY MY CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well the stingray fell through. He wants way more than we originally talked about. So heres the latest plan... I am going to do the 4.3l swap I have been dreaming about.

Well if you're going to do a 4.3L swap, then you might as well do an LT1 swap. Both would be just as difficult. You would have to get a new tranny, wiring harness, and the list goes on and on and I'm too lazy to type it all up. Anyway, just something you might wanna take into thought.

[QUOTE=92zcamaroperson]What made the swap take so long? QUOTE]

like i said i was working on it during school, so i could only get my hands dirty on the weekends, if your weekdays are free you could knock it out much faster than me... plus i ran corvette accessories and spent about 3 weeks on the body work and paint... and i had to drop the tank twice.. you have a tpi pump, you won't have to drop the tank, but a tbi pump (like i had) doesn't put out enough pressure for an lt1...

how tough was it to route the harness and deal with all of the wiring? and then the fuel lines.
