i'm not about to start another ricer argument but i just want somebody to explain why people who own show cars put tv's, speakers, neons, ps2's etc in their cars which all add hundreds of pounds on it then they feel they have to put racing rims, tires, brakes and excessive mods for the engine because it's an import car even though they probably arent going to let it out of the garage and if they do, they put it on a truck to tow it to the car show. i'm not pissed off or anything but i'm confused why they would pay thousands of dollars on things that aren't going to be judged (ain't like their going to dyno it or anything). like this one http://www.superstreetonline.com/featuredvehicles/130_0501_celica/index.html

it's an interesting topic. maybe it's their hobby, a very expensive one. just like, why do i play video games, i'm never going to win a championship in real life or something, but yet i probably spend around 500 dollars a year on videogames alone.

Because it impresses the judges more than a car with no engine mods.
No, they don't dyno the car nor do they race, but the judges know the parts are there.
Impressed judges = more likelihood of winning the show.
But it's not just an import car thing, I've seen dozens of shows with domestic old school muscle cars that never see the street but have superchargers sticking out of the hood.
BTW the link you posted is a bad example of what you are talking about - they didn't do much to the engine and that car, while ugly, actually runs on the street.

my guess is to show and impress people, you know how it is when you got a new phone or computer an you're excited an you show you're mates it just to them go "oooooohhh" its like that, but it lasts longer an more people see it so there's more "oooooooohhhh" in your life.
either that or its just an extension or their penis.

yeah but you've gotta admit you don't see import show cars everday on the road but the guys in the muscle cars usually use them as daily drivers or if the cars haven't seen the street then they've seen the track and on car shows it's very easy to see the muscle cars doing donuts

Thats the whole scene nowdays, remove your spare, backseat, and un-nessicery components, so you can put crap on your car to make up the original weight. They think they feel a performance improvement while they can play video games in their car, so who cares, its their problem when they get a flat tyre.
"I would put the spare tyre on, but I got rid of it so I could install a couple t.vs and a playstation to my car."
Meh, who cares, let em go, maybe they will come to their senses eventually...
Probably not...

Now that is Fully sik mayte. Theres enough gayges in that thing to tell the driver his medical condition. I have 8 gauges in my car, Tacho, Speedo, Odometer, Trip meter, Voltage, Oil pressure, Coolant temp, and oil pressure.
All came stock in the dash.
I waz thinkin of inztaling more fuly sik gayges to tel me my tranny fluid temp, powersteering fluid temp, vacuum, air fuel ratio, psi (my car is non turbo, but it would be sick, fully, anyway).
Does anyone rally need to know that much of whats going on under the bonnet? I usually check that by POPING THE DAMN BONNET INSPECTING A FEW THINGS.
Whats the bet that the owner of these cars doesn't know how to change the oil?

It's not an import thing at all... you wouldn't go to a hot-rod show and see a really nice rod with an unmodded engine...

there are a lot of them like in some car shows they have classes for cars that are restored to stock form like the factory colors, radio, wheels and especially the engine

do you have any idea who Fish Man is? He's only a fiberglass legend with over 15 magazine covers , and countless other articles about his work. All those guages work. He's the man who put together the beetle with no steering wheel because you drive it with a joystick.
Let me tell you guys something... whoever thinks that show cars shouldn't have accessories...
You're stupid.
I said it. wtf kinda idiot is gonna put thousands of dollars into a show car, and show it with stock wheels and tires, and no engine mods? A show car wouldn't BE a show car if you leave shit stock.
Seriously. That's like me asking... "Why do all these hot rod guys get nice paint jobs? I mean... that doesn't help performance. Maybe one day they will come to their senses. They should just leave looks up to the ricers."
Surriously, surriously.

we're not saying leave it stock but why do they have to buy the best and most expensive if they're not going to use it

To piss off ignorant people like yourself.
we're not saying leave it stock but why do they have to buy the best and most expensive if they're not going to use, it's like another thing that gets on my nerves people who buy a ferrari with over 500 bhp and drive it slowly around town to pick up chicks, ferrari might as well just give up and make a deal with honda to start putting civic engines in their cars because it's very rare to see a ferrari on the race track.
Sounds like someone is jealous. Why would someone spending so much money on a show car buy shitty parts?
Seriously, this shit is getting stupid. If you don't understand something, it must be gay, right? Seems like thats how everyone is turning these days. Kids see a showcar with thousands of dollars worth of interior fiberglassing and accessories, thousands of dollars worth of exterior detailing and paint, and becuase its got a aftermarket turbo omg that sh itis s0 g4y w4t the fuck y0.
Grow the fuck up. Its a different niche of cars. Ive seen some damn ugly street cars turned race cars, and they are ugly why? Because they have been modified for race. They go fast, they arent generally meant for show. Show cars are modified to win shows. Generally not to race.
Besides, its not your car, or your money, so shut the fuck up and respect someone else's hobby.

Who wants to spend thousands of dollars, and countless hours on a show car, and then put shitty mods on it? What kind of show car isnt supposed to have show parts?

wait let me give my in put. I own one of these show cars that you guys are talking about. The fact is there is alot of money to be made, yeah its expensive at first. As soon as you work up to a car thats winning shows it pays for itself. Second of all none of my engine mods I paid for. Thats why I wanted to make a show car. I just did the cosmetics and I got sponsored with all the engine mods I could ever want. I mean yeah my car is a show car but I take it out and race people once in a while it doesn't just sit in my driveway and rot. As far as neons and all that stuff goes you have to have them to win car shows. My sponsors pay me if I win anywhere from 1-3 place in best of show. In any best of show you can win about 600 dollars, not to mention all the free crap you get afterwards. It is basically like having a part time job. I get paid to travel around the U.S. I am going to a Hot Import Nights show in california and they are paying for, my weekends hotel room, 3 guest passes, 3 VIP passes, and they pay for all the costs of having your car in the show. It's not really that expensive I've put about 5,000 into the car of my own money. About 8,000 of it has been sponsored to me so its a fair trade. I guess it is a hobby in a way though

Um, personal satisfaction of knowing they built their car how they wanted to, and not to impress 14 year old little kids?

Haha...I'm a 17 year old, and anytime I see car shows going on, I go look. Because it impresses me. The cooler the stuff, the happier I am. Just because I don't spend that kind of money making my truck look great doesn't mean I don't want to look at other people's cars who do. As long as this is AutomotiveForums.com, there will be people who don't understand this concept.

You must not have fully grasped my statement. Read sv650s statement that I quotes, and my reply to his statement. I wasn't saying that car builders dont build there 5 digit cars to impress anyone, I was saying that besides impressing judges, they build for personaly satisfaction, a concept sv650s is obviously unfamiliar with.

I got what you were saying, I didn't even really mean to use the little reply thingy.
Edit - I was saying that just because they don't impress people like him doesn't mean that other people aren't impressed by them...even though that isn't even why people do that to their cars.

what u mean i'm not impressed by the show cars? i love the show cars, i used that celica because it's the best looking car i've seen in the magazine and i even have a poster of it in my room. i just asked a question that i've been trying to figure out so i asked on the forum and people took it entirely the wrong way.

either that or its just an extension or their penis.
I disagree with that comment. When i do mods to my truck i dont do them to "make up for something" i want it to look how i like and i want something unique. I see it as an extension of personality. Im not trying to be a dick to you because of that comment, im just saying how i am personally. I hate when people say, " oh thats the same as my car" i like when my car is unique and not like anyone elses.

thats how I feel too. I would never want to pull up next to someone on the road who has the same looking car as me I like to be unique. No matter what kind of car you buy if I went out and bought a lamborghini, sooner or later I would see one on the road. I like knowing that no matter where I go no one will have the same car as me, I just like to be unique. When a show cra is done right it doesn't just impress 13 year old kids, 40 year old guys who hate imports compliment me on my car. it's all about the time and commitment that you spend on your car that anyone can appreciate. It really pays for itself like I said, it does take money to get started but the initial investment is definately worth it in the long run
