Limp Mode Code #21 Intrepid 95

My car is getting in Limp Mode (stuck in 2nd gear). It is an Intrepid ES 3.3, year 95, 105000 miles. An electronic diagnostic indicated error code #21 on the pressure switch OD. The mechanic said me that I should change the solenoid pack, this cost $400. But, this may not solve the problem. In this case, the tranny should be rebuilt (cost of $1750). The error code obtained through the “engine check” of the panel indicates code #55 that means “no error”. This error code was obtained switching the ignition key On-Off three times. Moreover, the level of the transmission fluid was low. I changed it. However, this solved the problem during one day only. Researching this problem on the Internet, I found out that the code #21 can be solved with same inspection on the pressure switch, connector and cable. But, where is this pressure switch? Do you have same other suggestion to solve this tranny problem?

the pressure switch is housed inside of your solenoid pack, which is inside your transmission. There's no way for you to check that out w/o a scanner to test them electronically. Honestly, the cheapest way to try and clear up your problem is to change out your transmission fluid to Mopar ATF+4 and go from there. If necessary, do a complete flush of your transmission fluid, including flushing the cooler inside of your radiator of all the nasty old fluid. If you try that, it probably would clear up your transmission issues.

I changed the transmission fluid in a Dodge dealer last week. I hope that they put ATF4 in the transmission. This solved the problem only during the first day. After that, the car has been getting into Limp Mode two or three times a day. What is the relation of the radiator with transmission? Is the temperature of the transmission controled by the the radiator in the same way that happens with the engine?

the cooler inside your transmission is just that, keeps the transmission fluid cooled by convection. It's normally a copper tube that goes inside the outer core of the radiator meant to catch coolant that has been cooled by the air-to-air exchange. Transmission temps should be around 150-175 degrees farenheit. If it goes any higher, it overheats and can burn the transmission up quickly. Back to your original question, if the dealer changed it out, I'm 100% sure they used ATF+4. Have someone manually test the solenoids. The only way to do that is to have a scanner that can test each individual solenoid and only a transmission shop or the Dodge dealer can do that.

Hmmmmmmmmm In my book it says that a code 21 is an O2 Sensor I have a 1995 Intrepid with 227000 miles on it is my book wrong or is there diffrent 21 codes?

My 1994 Intrepid 3,3L had exactly the same problem. Even the error code was the same - code21. Took it to a tranny shop and after opening up the tranny they determined that it was the solenoid pack.
They changed it and the problem was solved. Cost me 515$. It's been shifting fine ever since.

Chances are the solenoid pack needs replacement . The other code 21 that printerdw is referring to is engine related and has nothing to do with your transmission problem. You will not get any transmission codes by cycling the key . You need a scan tool .

Hello Readers
Oh Gosh! I own a 94 intrepid 3.3 @ 90 thousand i had a rebuilt trans put in @ Multistate Trans for 2 grand, and now @ 30 thousand miles its stuck in 3rd. I called back Multistate and they said my warrent was up, so a friend said he'd look at it, and said i needed a new trans again so i went up and got one and he put it in, and at first it was fine, HE SAID, then when i went to examine the car, he's had it 3 weeks, he said i needed during all this a trans cooler, then sensors, and some other fluids, and i've dished out 700 dollars, that i had to borrow. I got frustrated w/this FRIEND and i went to a shop down the street from where the car was being worked on and they said a code 24 hard was showing? and could be electrical? Folks i dont want to sound "whiney" but i'm scared shittless here. This is ALL i own, and i'm a widow now and i have some serious health issues and i need that car and its all i have, and i cant seem to find anyone i can TRUST, or a place that doesnt want to take every penny i have, or make me feel asking a question is taking up all there time. What do i do? Its sitting at a place called Independent Transmission Of Michigan, Inc on w.six mile in Detroit Michigan 313-535-3950. A gentleman named Neil said he'd look at it, but again i have no knowledge of cars, and I dont know what to do. This is the third transmission now, and there wasnt a trans cooler on it until now, but im told it had to have it. I just dont no WHAT to do, or whom to turn too. Is there any one out there that will help someone in desperate need of help? Please!
