Trunk latch & manual top

I fell into an inexpensive 96 318i convertible. It was to be my daughter's in a year but I am digging the 26 mpg.
Everything was fine for the first couple of months. I then noticed some "extra parts" in the well that holds the top when in the down position. At this point I no longer had to use the release handle located in the rear driver side seat. I could unlatch up front and fold back.
I now can no longer open the trunk. When I turn the key counterclockwise, I hear a whirring sound like something is trying to engage but to no avail. I know I will have to eventually figure out the extra parts and reassemble.
One of the rear brake lamps has burned out and I cannot replace without trunk access. I live in Downtown KCMO and have been pulled over 3X's in the last 2 weeks because of the brake lamp.
Is there a bypass or short-term solution to opening the trunk or do I have a trip to the garage in my future???
Thanks,
Pauly
