91 Maxima problem

First time posting...
I have a '91 Maxima SE which has a weird problem. After being driven for an hour or two on the highway, it will start to bog down when I hit 2700-2800 rpm. If at that point, I try to accelerate, it really bogs down. This problem progressed to the point where I couldn't even drive it locally due to massive shuddering and jerking. I took it in, the mechanic repalced the distributor cap and the air inflow meter. This solved the problem for about a week, and now it's back, although not as bad. The mechanic isn't totally sure what the problem, but is going to take a look at the distributor itself.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'd like to know if this guy is just going to waste his time and my money.
Thanks,
V.

Could be the feul pump. You might also want to check some sensors related to the fuel. Also might want to check and make sure Fuel injectors are clean.

Thanks.
A follow up question. Does anyone have a recommendation for a skilled Maxima mechanic in Boston? The guy I use is fine for basic stuff, but I think he lacks the diagnostic equipment to mess with sensors, etc... I'd rather not take it to a dealer.

I'm having exactly the same problem as you, especially when I'm going up a hill. I've checked the primary ignition signals, switched out ignition coils, tested the fuel pressure, the throttle sensor for "smoothness" or "spikes", the ignition timing is right on, the exhaust gas sensor turns on and off 5 or 6 times within 10 seconds, replaced the temperature sensor connector, looked for exhaust leaks, etc.
I haven't tested cylinder compression (I have 120K miles on this engine) and the PCV valves (mostly because I can't find the buggers...are they threaded into the valve covers?). I'm going to try pressurizing my intake system in the next few days to see if there are any substantial leaks... I also wonder about my injectors as I tried a leak-down test and they didn't hold pressure...
If you find anything out, can you drop me an email. I don't get onto this forum very often. I'll do the same for you if I get it figured out.
