97 Elantra check engine light and transmission control module - SOHC?

Hi, there,
I just bought a used 97 Elantra wagon, and the check engine light was on, they hooked it up and reset it and it's on again. Also, I have revving, like trying to accelerate on the highway, it seems like it's in neutral for a minute sometimes, or I have to accelerate more slowly. I looked this up on another auto forum (am I allowed to mention that here?) and it said that there is a modified transmission control module (that might fix this). Then it says that check engine light may be related to this on "SOHC" models. BUt then the review I was reading said they only came in "dual over head cam" model. Make any sense? And do you know anything about what a "TCM" is or what it might cost or take to install it? Thought I might call a dealership and ask about it, then could ask my mechanic if he can do it! ;) I was looking for a place that might tell me of any recalls, etc. If you buy a used car, not from a dealer, would they still do recall work on it? Hmmm. Thanks for any help, or hope this helps someone.

Well, I believe they are all DOHC. I have a 2.0 and it is, and I believe the 1.8s are as well. As for recalls, the dealerships will do them. I bought mine from a used car dealer and have had recall work done at several different Hyundai dealers. I believe there was a recall for automatic trannys at one time, but I'm not sure which years/models were covered as mine's a 5-speed. Oh, and mine's a '99.
