computer problems

i have a 91 eagle talon FWD....no special tsi or anything....when i first bought the car, it was fine, but every now-and-then, it would surge. idle up, then idle down...had to fix the car, and change the engine to it...cracked the block on the old one, due to a wreck...the tranny was replaced with a new one, and the engine as well, a lightly used 2.0L DSM...straight from another one that was wrecked in the rear end...but, after hooking everything up, all wires replaced, i still hadn't replaced the original computer...after almost two weeks, the first gear stopped working. it takes off from second, which it will hardly do, because alot of my take-offs are on hills...if going downhill, that is fine. picks up great...but, up hill.....not good...plus, it still has the surging that the other one had...does anyone know what to do for this....i know i need to replace the comp, but will that fix the tranny as well. i know this car is completely computer controlled...everything on it is...please help....!!!!.....

The transmission is controlled by a separate computer, so that would not fix your problem there. DSM's are notorious for idle surges. Check your plugs and wires, make sure the plugs are gapped correctly and the wires are seated securely. The ECU does look like the main focus though, try and find a known working used one and see if that dosn't fix some of your problems.

finally got the surge out of the little engine....replaced all computer components, and took it to a shop to have the tranny worked on...not the tranny, but whatever it was, it was like 800.00 to fix. it was worth it, i suppose. i love this little car...almost annhiliated it again, though. hydroplaned....cool thing to do, but not into oncoming traffic...but, car is running alright now...thanx for the help.

car has been doing alright, except today, i added my big heavy ass subs to the car, and the tranny started acting a little funny. just did it once today, and it seemed like i was taking off in second gear again. listened to the shifts, and it was not going all the way into first. someone had mentioned that there was a seperat comp that controlled the tranny. where is that located at?
