156 selespeed rumbling noise

I need so advise please.
I have a 2002 Alfa 156 2.0 selespeed and have a rumbling noise and bumping coming through the car. I have had the tyres changed, thinking it was a bad tyre but to no effect. Also just had the suspension seen to because it was badly squeaking.
After a bit of investigation I find that I can reproduce the symptoms if I put the handbrake on and depress the accelerator. The car seems to drive OK apart from the noise and bumping although it seems to want to slow down quicker than normal when you take you foot of the accelerator.
Has anyone had or heard about these symptoms before. I’m assuming I have clutch problems but not sure. Fear that a garage will just replace whether it’s the problem or not.
