It mean's your car came with a few options, like power steering, A/C, cruse, 14" wheels, some have a tach, and spolier.

i too have a 97 LX, i know for a fact it doesnt mean it's the luxury edition. the only extras on my car are the 14 inch alloys and uh... the automatic trans. wish mine could have at least been an se model... or better yet, something not a ford...

Okay guys lets be honest here.
"LXL was the "base" model, which means it was the 1.9 liter Ford-build engine, 14 inch basic wheels etc. Now you could have many options on this, it essentailly refers to drivetrain and tire size.
"EX" was the "upgrade" drivetrain, a 1.8 L Mazda-made engine. Smaller motor, but came in a dual-overhead cam setup instead of the single-OHC on the 1.9... MUCH more horsepower, and bigger wheels. This also means the transmission, gearin getc is different but that's irrelevant to the everyday driver.

The LX stands for Luxury Cross. Its a way of saying power steering, a/c and power locks. And if this is there version of luxury the I hate to see the real base model
