Basic questions about DSM

I am looking to buy a first generation DSM and after some research I have some basic questions. What is the difference between the 90-91 models and the 92-94 ones. Also, is there any difference between the Mitsubishi, Chrysler, and Eagle versions?

Jw, why a '92? What are you referring to when you say a 4 bolt rear?

And what years have the 6 bolt vs 7 bolt motor and what is the major difference?

Not exactly sure what the 4 bolt part is referring to on the rear end, but its better than the 3 bolt. The 90-most 92's had the 6 bolt that is less prone to crankwalk. If I remember right, the 92-94 7 bolts arent bad with cw, but the 95+ had the worst luck. The 6 bolts have beefier internals than the 7 bolts and if I remember right, they have two oil squirters instead of 1 in the 7 bolt. CW doesnt happen often, but the 7 bolts get it more, just because I like to be on the safe side, I would get a 6 bolt. I like the 90-91 looks lots more than the 92-94s, but if you dont care about looks, I would take their advice and get a 92 with the 6/4 combo.

90- early 92 models have the 6 bolt engine. Its said that 7 bolt motors are more prone to crankwalk. imo I would go for a 91 mainly because I like the look of the pop ups more. The 90 isnt able to use any other year of ecu without modification and that can be a hassle if your ecu starts to leak. the 90 also has different cams and random stuff like that.

92.5-99 (they changed motor half year) have the 7-bolt motor which although is a great motor, is prone to CW unfortunately, not that bad though IMO. Before that were the 6-bolts. The 4-bolt refers to what rear end it has. The 4-bolt rear end is stronger and will hold more power before breaking than the 3-bolt.

Thanks guys, it looks like I will be looking at a 90-91. I just wanted to confirm that ou can swap the later into the 90 ecu right?

Ecu swaps wont work either way you do it. You cant use a 90 in a later year and you cant use a later year in a 90. That is, without modification. Its easier to modify a 90 ecu to work for a later year than it is to try and get one to work for a 90.
