92 Aerostar E4WD trans

The electronic 4 wheel drive trans went out on my 92 Aerostar 3 liter V6. It'll shift when cold but when it heats up it stops shifting altogether. I changed the filter and fluid but that didn't help.

Does anyone have any ideas or know where I can find info on this trans at a reasonable price?

Thanks

I have 3 of these vans (86,90, and 91) and the problem you describe may be a bad torque converter. If the van drives fine cold and then doesnt shift(seems to slip bad or real bad,...maybe makes a whining noise) when it is warm (like when the trans fluid get to about 100 degrees) then the torque converter may be your culprit. There is a servo that locks the torque converter when the tranny is cold and then unlocks it when the tranny gets warm. if the torque converter is bad, you may get this problem,... hope it helps -Sean

You can find info about the trans in the ATSG manual written for it. I'm looking at my copy right now, and I really don't see where in the hydraulic circuits there is a "cold torque converter lock servo" described, and can't understand why a TC would ever be "locked" cold, but then again, it's only a 2003 publication, so it might not cover the older models. You can get ATSG manuals many places, or call them directly at 1-800-245-7722
