Removing Alternator

2000 Metro 1.3L engine. Am having an interesting puzzle - how do I get the alternator out. There is no clearance anywhere to easliy remove it. The factory service manual and the Chiltons are pretty useless for this procedure as they do not say what to remove to get it out.. Anyone tried this. It can be done but involves removing a whole bunch of unrelated stuff from what I can see.

OK got it done eventually. The lower mounting bracket, the plastic shield and part of the exhaust has to be removed to remove the alternator. It just about squeezes past the exhaust hanger and the driveshaft. Removing the driveshaft helps but I got away without but it is a struggle. There is no way it can be removed from the top unless the intake manifold and the fuel lines are removed.

Sometimes the manuals are really worthless. The factory manual is reasonable for most procedures although they usually forget a step or two. The chilton's is less useful and not very useful for the newer cars as it has very little info on the ECM, sensors etc. On this occasion the factory manual just says that you have to take the alternator bolts out and out it comes (supposedly - whoever wrote that I guess did not try it). The chilton says to remove all that is needed and then remove alternator - how useful.
