2002 - Programming remote controls

Does anyone know if there's a limited number of times you can program the remote controls for the door locks? I had the original remote and a replacement one last week that I was able to reprogram (turn key in ignition from position 1 to position 3 eight times in less than ten seconds)both and they work fine.

I just came across another remote and wanted to get it programmed. I've tried the programming about 15 times and it doesn't work. I'm wondering if they only allow a certain number before you have to take it to the dealer.

I know you can program up to 4 four remotes for your mountaineer. CHeck to make sure you have the right remote the numbers on the back!!!!

Also, make sure the battery in the remote is good. Since the remote does not have an LED, it's hard to tell whether or not the battery is good in the remote.
