This is a CONTINUATION of my previous post...was typing and hit the wrong key!!

I rebuilt the car, drove it about 800 miles and the EXACT SAME PROBLEMS began to reappear. This is driving me and my mechanic NUTS!!! Does anyone out there have any idea what the problem was with that TBird configuration? What did Ford do to solve the problem? What can we do to solve it now?

My truck would idle really high at times (around 2500-3000 rpms) then drop back down to barely running at all. Check your TPS voltage, should be .9v I think. Also check for vacuum leaks. I finally got my problem fixed for the most part when I replaced the ignition module on the distributor. But this is with a 302 so I'm not sure that these exact fixes would work for you. How high is it reving?

Ok...to answer the question...as I recall it would revv up to between 2200-3000 rpms and then drop down to 500 or less...all on it's own with no pressure on the accellerator...also builds up so much carbon (very quickly!) that it would spew out big cloud of black smoke when started...had to stop parking it in the garage because of the smoke....not a good idea in Alaska in the middle of the winter!! Don't know about the voltage but will pass the information on to my mechanic.
