Oil leak and oil pressure high

my car has just started to leak oil its not a fast leak btu i cant find where it's coming from what the easyest way to find an oil leak and since the leak my oil pressure has been run real high like up in the 80 as soon as i start the car it goes right to 80 but if i let the car set it drop down but as soon as i hit the gas it goes up just like the gas gage i cant figure out why it doing that

is it the LT!? If so check your optispark seals. they tend to go quite often.

how do i no if it is a lt1

i have the LS1 and mine does the same thing.
when i first start the car the oil pressure is around 70-75 psi, but eventually it goes back to 40psi. i think the oil just has to warm up and "loosen up". :confused:

but mines doesnt ever go down the only time it goes down is when im idling but as soon as i go it shoots right back up

at idle mine also returns to 40psi.
but when accelerating it goes up tp 60-65psi.
thats just because the motor is working and the oil pump is working harder.

i think that as long as it stays above the red line its ok.

as your engine gets warmer the oil pressure will go down its so high when u start if because the oil is cold and thick what weight oil do u have in it?

i use 10w-30 because its summer.
the only thing is 95firebird doesn't know where the leak is.

i lost 2 quarts of oil once. cause= stupidity.
i forgot to put the dipstick all the way down. :banghead:

im using 10w-30 i drive the car back and forth to work on weekend for abotu 2 hours there and 2 hours back the whole way there the car runs a about 75-80 psi

try reaching over the engine and under the windshield and feel around and see if u get oil on ur hand
i have a leak in that spot and was told $400 to fix so i left it as it is a very slow leak.
and by the way ur gas gauge going up when u take off is normal. its due to the gas getting sloshed to the back of the tank which makes the guage go up
ull probly notice ur gas drops when u stop hard as well its normal

Well first off, what engine do you have? 3.4L V6 or 5.7L V8. If you have the V6, then the problem may be the type of oil you are using. The V6's require 5w-30. 10w-30 is a little too think for them, which could be why your oil pressure is so high.

3.4 the guy at autozone said to use 10w30 cuz of the miles on the car i have been using for a about a year not and it just started running high

those small engines are supposed to run around that psi.

Well the guy at autozone is completely wrong. If you read your oil fill tube cap, then you will see that in the center is says to use SAE 5W-30. I don't see how using 10W-30 would be benefitiary on a high mileage car. Especially since they make specially formulated versions of 5W-30 for high mileage vehicles.

My oil pressure, when I first crank it, it raises to 80 psi. But it eventually falls back down to about 55-65. If your oil pressure is at least falling back down to around that area psi, then there's no problem. The 3.4's are supposed to run between 50-65 psi. And if you say that once you start it up and go driving, that the oil pressure doesn't drop any further... then I would recommend that first, you started to use 5W-30 oil, and then add a can of Seafoam into your engine (same place where you would add your oil). That should help clean out the internals of your engine. After about 500-750 miles, I would then drain your oil and add new oil. That way you can get all the crud out of your engine that Seafoam has loosened up.

ok i changed th eoil and put 5w-30 like you said and still no change its doing the same thing and i was talking to one of my buddys he say that s a sign the the motors going out??? what do u all think and as fo rthe oil leak i noticed that it looks like it coming from the valve cover gaskets no if it was would it have a slow drip on the ground?

maybe valves or the gaskets are shot.
could be any # of things.
im not an expert so i couldn't tell you.
couldn't hurt to have a repair shop just look at it and diagnose the problem.

i have had one already and they said they would have to take the covers off just to look would cost 500 that doesn even include repair
