Odomiter not working

My '94 Cougar XR7 4.6 V-8's odometer has stopped working for the second time. The first time I got another dash and it worked for a while. Now the second dash has quit working. Neither the odometer or trip odometer are working. What drives a digital odometer. The actual odometer numbers are mechanical but they are driven by a digital signal. Is it something near the the wheels or is it something with the transmission. This is my second '94 Cougar and both the first and now the second needed transmission replacements. The computer on my first "94 fried about 4 months after I bought it. I love the M body Cougar but I don't want to have to get another dash. I've already spent 1 grand on a transmission, need to replace the front end and now the odometer issue again. Someone please help me.

I too have a 94 XR7 that I replaced the inst. cluster trying to get a working odometer. It too worked for about 43 miles, all the way to work, then it didn't work after that. I don't beleive it's the cluster now. Is there a separate sensor for the odometer? The speedometer works fine.

I've got the same thing on a 1995. Could it be a fuse or a fusible link?

You'll find out, like I did after further investigation that these odometers have a gear that when a tooth gets broken it will stop working. This gear is a weak link in the odometer. You can get a replacement gear of the internet. I don't have the link right now but it is about 48 bucks for the little gear and a howto for repairing it.
