fuel problem?

I have a 88 fiero 2.5. The car will not start on it's own, when i put fuel in the throttle body, the car will pick up and eventually run on it's own. When i shut it off it will not restart unless i put gas in the throttle body. any suggestions? It seems as though the injector, wich is brand new,is not spraying enough fuel to start the car.

"jaylie,
welcome to AF.
you can change your fuel filter (a $10. item) first, but it sounds like the fuel pump (in the tank I am pretty sure).
what's your mileage? usually these GM pumps will last for 80-140K depending on use, and even type of fuel used. also the pumps usually go bad on a full tank of gas, never 1/4 tank or empty.
(weight and volume of the fuel makes it more difficult as a "pusher"-type pump to siphon from a 3/4-full tank)
hope it is just a clogged fuel filter, but if not, AutoZone does carry the AC Delco pump (don't buy a cheapy, or you could be back under the car in mid-winter; not fun) for under $50-60 with a strainer sock.

hope this helps,
chris

a weak pump will cause it to possibly idle, and once under load will stumble, backfire, and/or die, or all of the above.
by spraying start fluid, or carb clean, you are manually fuelling the TB.
you could probably stand back there and shoot a whole can and keep it idling for five to ten minutes.
you can try disconnecting the battery, and resetting the ECM and fuel pump and injector, but I think it is probably the pump.
definitely change the filter first, though. less expensive, and if it is just clogged, and not feeding the new injector (you are sure it is the correct one?), then you are on the road for less than $10. US Dollars.

good luck,
chris

could a bad map sensor and o2 sensor cause the injector not to spray enough fuel to start the engine. I believe both of these are also bad on my car.

this changes everything.
both components are rather inexpensive; however, if you have had no engine light, it is difficult to say could be the culprit.
I would still change the filter (unless you know it has less than 30K on it), and then I would disconnect the battery, to reset the ECM (this will also reset the pump and injector, so if the old injector was running lean for some odd reason, this will richen the mix, and you might be fixed). GMs upon cold start will still run and the O2 will not be a factor until warm-up (when the computer comes out of its loop), but a bad MAP could cause intermittent idle, and/or high revs.
a MAP can be checked at AutoZone for no cost, and some can be repaired (if you have patience, steady hand, and solder equip).

both these components are easier and less expensive than a fuel pump; I'd try them first, but isolating it, so you only have to buy one component, rather than five would be help on wallet and time.
when you go to buy the fuel filter, take the MAP with you to have it checked (but don't pitch it, even if you swap it)
my O2 sensor has 260,000 miles on it, and my 2.5L is still hammering away (of course, modifications were in order), but the old one-wire ones are just feedback, and OBD1 is very limited, so:
no engine light, don't think these are the ones.

good luck,
chris
