I don't know about your '89 but when they tried to do it on my '93 it lasted for one-two days. After that I discovered the computer gradually adjusted it to where it was before, so my problem (read my topic please) came back again

timing as in ignition timing? loosen the two bolts holding the distributor on and turn it.(with rotation of engine to advance, against rotation to retard). learn to use a timing light to know exactly how much you turn it.

to properly set timing, you gotta unplug the throttle position sensor after the car is fully warmed up. then losen your distributor and rotate until the pin on the block matches the last line on the right side of the crank pulley ( 20 degrees btc ). then adjust the idle by turning the idle adjustment screw on the back side of your intake manifold, and adjust it back to being 800 rpm. then plug the TPS back in, and then shut the car off, then turn it back on.

just re read, no clue for a 89. but it should be very similar.
