I have a very nice 95' 3.0 that has a slipping tranny AX4N. I've priced new, alot, can't seem to find a used under 400. I am concidering rebuilding it myself. I get parts discounts, and have a bit of experiance under my belt. I am not some yahoo with a screwdriver who is gonna go to town on his tranny. Does anyone out there have any advice/words of incouragement / good or bad? What is need to be replaced? I plan on just getting a tranny rebuild book from the parts store. Thanks for the all the advice in advance. I'll check in after a while.

My advice: keep a few washtubs around for parts! A guy I know is great at working on Fords, and when he went into a transmission that kept breaking on him (the car was souped up and was too powerful for this transmission), he found more parts and pieces than he knew what to do with. He ended up carrying all the parts crammed into the case and two #3 washtubs to someone he knew who was a transmission specialist. Those transmissions can be a real PITA that can take you over quickly! If you go, have plenty of time and patience. Don't expect to get it all together in a month's time.
