Clunking sound when turning steering wheel

Hi everyone~
I drive a 99 VW Jetta VR6. This morning on the highway, all of a sudden it felt like somthing was wrong with the front left tire. When exiting and turning sharp right, there was a loud, repetitive clunking sound. I had several more turns before pulling into work and this was now happening when turning both left and right. Any ideas? I know next to nothing about engines, so please explain like you would to a ten-year-old. Thanks!
Not sure if this has anything to do with it: about 10 days ago, i felt some "grinding" when turning the steering wheel. The next day Ihad my brakes replaced, and haven't felt that again until this morning.

This sounds like something that happened on my '02 1.8L, but when I took it in for its scheduled maintenance, they were able to get rid of it. Sorry that I don't know what they did or what exactly the problem was.
