Sorry, classic failure mode of pump or valve body, do search here and read all about it. Search AX4N or 4s

Be prepaired to be raped by a tranny shop, or sell the car for parts. Seems the going price is about 2K for rebuild.

Yeah, I'd have to agree. Classic Taurus garbage transmission. I have a '98, and mine did the same thing at 72k miles. Had it rebuilt at AAMCO for $1,700, and they gave me a 3yr/36k warranty as well. Check them out. Avoid a dealership at all costs though, unless you want to spend well over $3k, which is what Ford quoted me.

which transmission did you have, the 4N or 4S? (if you had duratech, its the 4N for sure, which is supposed to be heavy duty) and how many miles did you have?

If you have the vulcan engine, you most likely have the AX4S transmission. Duratec is guaranteed AX4N transmission. From what I understand, the AX4N isn't much different that AX4S - except AX4N can skip gears 1-3 2-4 4-2 3-1 and AX4S can't 1-2 2-3 3-4 4-3-2. So the AX4S gets more wear.
