11.44 @ 120 .... finally, Hyde gets a worthy new personal best

Well, I entered the Fall NHRA Sport Compact Nationals at Englishtown this weekend.
The results:
Saturday:
Round 1 qualifier: 12.3 @ 116 w/1.99 in the 60' (this was on my raod race tires ~ just experimenting)
Round 2 qualifier: 11.4 @ 120 w/1.53 in the 60' (drag radials, new plugs, no air filter)
Round 3 qualifier: 11.71 @ 119 w/1.64 in the 60' (no changes, but breaking up bad)
On round 3 I hit a .06 R/T, but I had less boost on the launch so I had a weaker 60'
After being stuck at 11.7s for 1.5 years, it was a pleasure to finally break away from them.
You will notice in the video of 11.44 that my ignition was breaking up at the top of 3rd and 4th.
The bad news is that I pushed the car hard on my 3rd qualifier with the ignition breaking up worse and I think I paid the price. I started to overheat at the end of the run and I am really smoking healthy out of the PCV breather. The 200K+ mile engine is really getting close to being smoked (literally)
Sunday:
Round 1:
I had a bye and saved the car with a 15 sec pass
Julie Stepan (WRX) beat an Evo
Sean Ivey was unopposed.
Round 2:
Sean Ivey was unopposed.
Julie beat me. I red lighted but she killed me to the 330' anyway and got off of it.
I stayed in it for a [email protected] with a 1.803.
My leaving early really had no time for boost to build so the launch was weak sauce. :(
Round 3:
Not sure what happened between Julie and Sean
I qualified 3rd and finished 3rd.
In qualifying, both Julie and Sean ran new PB against me.
Both went 9.4s!
This is my 11.44 run against Sean Ivey

Dang, nice times. Sheesh, that's fast. It's about time for an engine rebuild, or a new forged motor, for more boost of course. I've always wanted a second generation MR2, as I use to own a 1st gen in my early college years.
Alas I have the WS6 though, pity me..... :p
You better be running 10's soon.

Thanks guys ... I think 10s are possible the way the car sits if the ignition would have held up.
I am consistently hitting 1.5s in the 60' when I make the boost at the line. The 1.6 I left near perfect (.06), but not enough boost and the redlight I had no boost made and limped to a 1.8.

Doubt it. But if someone can shoehorn a GN motor into a Geo Metro, i'm pretty sure its possible.

Heres hoping the new engine give you a few good more runs...and then 1 time you absolutely domilish it running 10s and shes done...I think it would be a fitting end
Amazing runs man I never get tired of hearing what Hyde can do

Tell us about the 2nd gear launch !
JekylandHyde
10-05-2005, 10:03 PM
I actually had a .06 R/T on my 3rd run ... that was awesome :)
I did not try a 2nd gear launch since the car was not performing optimally. I wqas just satisfied getting down the track. The 11.4 felt absolutely pathetic to me. However, when I saw Ivey's 9.4 time come up on the screen and I did not have much track left I figured it must have been better than it felt.
As for exotics, I have not had the pleasure of racing anything truly exotic. Corvettes is about as exotic as it got and the most exotic Vette I raced killed me. It went 7 seconds to my 12.0 :( He finished before I was at 1/2 track :(

Good times.
.06 light is pretty good, but man that .5xx is horrible (assuming that .000 is perfect). You must be waiting to see the green light come on!
If you could cut .0x lights then you'd probably be able to beat cars that are 2 or 3 tenths faster then you.

chevy, the .5 light is bad as it was on a .00 tree, but remember this is qualifying and R/T does not matter.
My R/Ts for qualifying were .2, .5 and .06.
Although the .06 was an awesome R/T, it cost me boost at the line and my run was slower.
My best situation seems to be a .2 R/T as that is when I make the most boost. It sucks, but I am racing on the Pro tree and do not have the luxury of the "count down."

I could see where that could be a little harder. I've never came off a pro tree before so I wouldn't really know, lol.
By you saying you can't build as much boost if you try and "tree" your opponnent, I'm assuming its taking you a certain amount of time to build your boost. What I would do if I were you would be to try and fix that, lol. I dont know what kind of lights everyone else cuts in your class, but if they cut .0xx lights you're "spotting" the other car almost 2 tenths on the tree. Even if you do your best ET with .2 lights, you're still giving up the time on the tree. But I guess its as broad as it is long in finding ways to make up time in heads up racing.
Either way, I'd do something with the turbo to try and make it spool up to the desired amount faster so you could work on cuttin .0xx lights. I wouldn't know how to go about doing that personally, but I would try and figure somethign out! Maybe a two-step/line loc set-up like the Pro Stock cars use to leave the line (I know they don't use forced induction, but they still have to leave at so many RPMs). If for nothing else, doing that would give you more consistancy on your reaction times.
Or maybe even stage first and start building some RPMs (and boost) before the other car gets into the lights. You don't have a converter to heat up, lol, but I guess clutches will melt down too, lol.
Oh well. You just keep doing what you're doing because apparently you're doing OK, lol.
