Passat Remote Battery Change/Reprograming

My wife managed to wash her Passat remote control key and immediately after it worked fine. Now, a day later it does not work. I replaced the batteries but still nothing. Do you need to re-program the control after a battery change. Want make sure I didn't miss anything before I have to buy a new one. Thanks.
