90 towncar spring conversion

my air ride failed on my 90 towncar signature i have been told that i can replace it with springs and never have to worry about it agian i have found conversion kits from 250 to 170 but when i called discount auto they said they had the coil springs for 60 dollars what else other than probably fresh shocks would i need to put on other than the springs i would appreciate some insight if any body has done this to their car or if you are a mechanic and have preformed this on a towncar

Don't bother with the conversion kits they sell online. They to often charge more then there worth. They take advantage of the air suspension by making sound special and difficult to convert. And then they charge more then what the coils are worth because they want to make you think that they are special "coil springs" when in fact they are no different then the ones found on the Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis. they even offer kits for those cars as well making it even more insulting.

Why is it easy to convert? Well the rear suspension design is shared with the Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis, for these 2 cars the air suspension is optional. They normally have rear coil springs.

Now that price at discount auto is pretty good but go to autozone and ask for a 1990 Grand Marquis and it will be $52 and it will include the hardware to install them, the rear coils use the same mounts as the air.

When my air suspension goes I'm converting to coils. Having driven a few of them the ride is competent and is almost indifferent. However if you frequently load the car up with heavy objects the back end will sag.

A 1996 Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis, technically the 1992-1997 CV/GM are compatible but just stay within your year. If you want firmer ride go with the police ones (Crown Victoria). If not just get the ones for a Grand Marquis. Just be sure they come with the spring isolators they are needed to install them in a car that previously had Air Suspension.

Also air bags are on your steering wheel and inside your passenger side dash. Air springs are what hold the rear of your car up.

I ordered the coil springs from Autozone. Got them the next day $56 for the pair which included the isolators and am very happy with ride! I'm still working on getting the air suspension light out.

great to hear i am ordering mine tomorrow when i get paid how hard was it to install did you do it your self or did you pay someone to install them i do have access to a lift but i have never done anything like this before if you did it how hard was it ad how long did it take

I jacked that baby up, put it on some stands, took off both wheels and followed the directions from lincolnonline.com, which are to shut off the switch in your truck, yank the clip off the top of the bag above the frame, pry the bag loose from the axle and unhook the solenoid. Then take the bag off. Take that bolt loose on the shocks (the coils came with a rust removing solution I'd advise you to use) and let the hang down. When you put the coil in put your isolator on it and fit it to the top. I used a reverse clamp to push the axle down to make room for the coil but you can use a jack as long as you're careful not to pinch any lines. They slipped right in! I jacked the axle back up to connect the shock, put the wheels back on and my wife has been riding smooth every since. If you find out wher the suspension module is please let me know so I can get that air suspension light cut off.

i believe the air suspension module is in the trunk, the right side behind the right fender panel.go behind the grey board by the right rear fender panel , look for a module and disconect it

I picked up a set of springs for the rear to replace mine, I like the Ride, I like the price, i think the kit was around 150 to 170 with shipping and all, took about 2 - 3 days, installed the springs in 20 min. just drop the shocks, pull the pins on the air bags, and shove in the springs, drop the car on the springs and put the shocks back on, could not be easier, and Love the way it handles now, no rear sway tearing around the track, not many people drift their towncar...

I have a 99 towncar. Anyone know if I can do this type of spring conversion on it? If so what years and makes are the same so I can get springs for it?
