I've got a 71 bug and i'm new to this bug. I can't seem to find any info or pics on rebuilding a IRS trans. It's out of the vehicle, but I'm not real sure of the disassembly. Anybody can help ?

buy a 71 beetle repair book, you can probly get one online, eBay is a good bet. and make sure you have a transaxle rebuild kit. you can get one of those at dansperformanceparts.com/buggy/buggystore

Rebuilding requires alot of special jigs & tools, Bentley manuals cover it well.

Rebuilt IRS trannies are less than $400 dollars, some places less than $300. Good used units can be had for much less. I bought a used IRS that operated perfectly for $75 bucks, axles and CVs included.
Check www.thesamba.com (http://www.thesamba.com) or www.interstateusedparts.com (http://www.interstateusedparts.com).
Unless you really want to learn the inner workings, and have the special tools, clearance gauges, etc, you'll be better off getting a rebuilt or used one.
