Well i have a problem guys, i am gonna rebuild my engine in my 86 camaro but it has a 305, now i would buy a 350 but don't really have the funds right now but my engine comes stock with about 160 HP and want to beef that up to about 250 or above. Now i know that the cam has a lot to do with it but does anyone else have any ides about what i can do to get my HP up that high?

I think a 86 is a 4 barrel. Definatly clean out or buy a new carb. I replaced the quadra-junk on my boat and now it runs alot better.

'86 was the first year of fuel injection, he either has a tpi or tbi...

silver is it a tbi or tpi?

It's a TBI.. if it was a TPI it'd be rated at 215ish horsepower.

1985 was the first year for TPI and it was rated at 215 HP, in 1986 TPI was derated to 190 HP. A carbed version was avialable through 87 and they put out anywhere from 140-190 HP.
That said...for real power a 305 is a waste of money and time to build up. You can get a used 350 block for around $250 (or less). 350 pistons are cheaper than 305's, The connecting rods will interchange, 350 cast cranks are CHEAP, might be able to get a used one in good shape even cheaper. The only "real" expense would be heads and again, you can get them used for pretty cheap.

I know, some junkyard's are ridiculous. $500 for a seized up motor, what the hell is going on.

Why the hell would someone want a 2.8? 3.1 is superior :icon16:

5 EXTRA HP!

no mine isn't a TPI it is just a standard 86 4 barrel carb with a 305, belive me i work on it all the time....but i just met this guy in amarillo that owns a machine shop and he said for about 1200 bucks he cout get a 350 block,heads,pistons....everything even the machine work..so i think that i will just go with that but if yall have anymore ideas that are better than that then just let me know my mind is always open for opinions and better ideas

Why would you recommend a new engine when he has a good/ running one right now?
Just mod the 305, it has potential for what you want to do.
Just compared to the 350, it has limits, its not a waste of time, you just have to know what your doing with it.
