My 92 gand am i recieved from my aunt who took perfect care of it, has a sickening rattling noise comeing fmor the engine when you turn it on. I want to try and fix it... but i don't know where to start? any help would be great. ( the car runs, but the rattling keeps getting worse every time it drives, it gets louder...sounds liek my engine is going to explode. need help a.s.a.p.

Welcome to the forum. First of all, stop driving your grand am. It sounds like it has some kind of damaged internals that need to be addressed before they fail completely and you get screwed.

Could you be more descriptive of the "rattle"? Is it a rattle, or is it like a knock? It could be anything from bad lifters, to bad main bearings. Any other symptoms? When is the sound heard, is it consistent with RPMS, ect.?

Hmmm,
I havent driven it lately,
it's like a knocking sound, sounds liek somethings beating against the engine, i read someones post about their bearings, and i have a feeling it might be that. It makes teh noise consistantly when you drive, it doesn't stop ever. I remember it had trouble going in reverse too. Theres not much i know about it, so this is about as descriptive as i can be, heh.
is there any possibilities of what it could be?

What engine?

It could possibly be a bad LIM gasket, and enough coolant has already infiltrated your oil to eat away at your bearings. Check your oil for milkyness, and check your coolant for chunkyness / brown stuff.

It could be many other things though too. It could be your AC clutch is not releasing; it could be tranny related.... what do you mean it had trouble going in reverse?

It had trouble backing up out of my drive way, it would stall, and i would have to shut it off and turn it back on sometimes. I checked my oil , it is slightly milky, and my coolant has brown. What does this mean? If my bearings were being eaten away at... is there a way i can fix it?

Damn. I'm sorry to tell you this, but I think you deffinately have had an external Lower Intake Manifold Gasket failure. Some of the other guys on here might have some other ideas, but that's deffiantely what comes into my mind. To explain, the LIM gasket on some of the 60 degree V6's (yours included) were made out of a plastic that slowly weakened / melted overtime from being heated / cooled so many times. It was never a recall issue (though it should've been) as it happens on about 3/4 of Grand Ams. I was lucky - my leak is an external leak, and eventually stopped itself. On your engine, when the gasket failed, it allowed the oil and coolant to mix. The coolant has some kind of chemical (i forget what it's called) that can be corrosive over time. So over time, it has eaten / deterioated the main bearings on your engine's cam, resulting in the knocking sound. It could eventually get bad enough that your engine could seize up. Really, if a bad LIM is infact your problem, and you have sustained bearing damage, your easiest / cheapest route would be to simply have a new motor put into it. Like I said though, the LIM is my opinion, and there's lots of other guys on here that know there stuff - so I would wait for their opinions before you go making any big decisions. Just don't drive it.
