Well on my way back to NY from eastern PA I got pulled over for supposivly doing 76 in a 45. Here's the story, I'm on a 65 and it drops down to 45 through a commercial area with stoplights and stuff. Well I go through the last light and see nothing but highway in front of me and assume the speedlimit has gone back up to 65(no sign for as far as I could see.) I put my cruise back on and set it at like 73-74(mind you people are passing me at this speed). Not 2 seconds after I set my cruise i look in the rearview and there's a cop trying to pull me over. I pull over and get my info for him before he even asks. He asks me why he pulled me over, and I say maybe for speeding but I wasn't going that much over. He's say's how much over were you doing, I say 8-10(it's on cruise and I was going downhill). He laughs and say's try 31! I'm like umm isn't the speedlimit 65? and he's like yea, about 1/4 of a mile up the road you're still in a 45. SHIT SHIT SHIT!!! So he goes back to his car and does the paperwork and then proceeds to tell me that he got me on radar and all the info is on the ticket. Only problem is I have a radar detector that is like brand new and goes off for anything. The detector didn't go off before I got pulled over. Then he tells me I'm in luck because I'm from NY and if I'd been from PA I would be getting charged with reckless driving, have 5pts. on my license, and would be getting arrested. So after all is said and done I gotta pay $200 and get 2pts. on my license. My question is, is there anything I can do besides pleading not-guilty(the town where I got busted is like almost 6hrs. from my house)? Any help would be appreciated because my insurance company is really not gonna like this, even though it's my first and only ticket of any kind. Thanks. Peace-

Well here is the bitch of the situation. Cops love this setting, because they are assuming you wont drive back and argue the ticket, and if they are pricks they will be hefty on the fines and points.

2 things to do.

1) check if the points carry over. Last I checked, I'm pretty sure NY and PA points carry over both ways, but call your DMV to make sure.

2) I know the drive will be a PITA and probably cost you money, and I'm not even sure if you can argue VIA mail. I think you must appear in court. I'd say go back and argue. Despite the money and time wasted, you will probably still do better overall trying to plead not guilty and getting the ticket reduced to a lesser charge. If you keep points off your license, it is all worth it in the end IMO. That is all I can really suggest.

Yea I can plead not-guilty but I can't do it by mail, I have to go to court in the town I got the ticket. The problem is that it was such a small town that I'm almost certain that the cop who gave me the ticket will show up for court. If I plead guilty I get 2pts. on my license and have to pay a $200 fine. Also, because I was doing more than 20mph over the limit I am going to be considered as an "unsafe driver" by my insurance company and if they renew my policy this year it will get atuomatically canceled. Let's say I plead not-guilty and go to the court date. What is the worst thing that can happen? Can my situation get any worse? Or will it stay the same or get better? Thanks. Peace-

Well, he didn't cut you a brake, so the only way that it can get worse is by the addition of court costs. When I went to court in Michigan it was like $20 extra, so I'd definetely fight it.

No, it was a local. It sounded like the cop busts people here all the time, because I was like well you're out of the town-area but there is no speed limit sign for almost another mile. And he was like yea i suppose there should be a sign there but there isn't. He wasn't a dick or anything he was cool, but still gave me the ticket. Peace-

Well first you should never assume a speed-limit cops will give it to u hard on that one. Second i would go and fight it in court. If you show up theyll think "wow this guy came all the way from NY to fight the ticket" If you plead that you honestly thought the speed limit went up they might let you go. Let us know

Seriously plead not guilty. All that can happen is you pay an extra $30 if you lose. TO this point in my life, EVERYONE that I know who has gone to court has been offered a deal. And by everyone I mean hundreds of people. Unless the cop already cut you a huge break at the scene of the stop, ALWAYS go to court and try to get it reduced.
