Synthetic oil

Hello, i have used petroleum based oil for 130k miles on my 96 sentra 1.6. I was just wondering if anyone has done a change to synthetic at this many miles, even though it isn't much for a nismo, but i just wanted to know, i was given a case of amsoil and wanted to use it, it is actually cheaper to use it than petroleum because of extended drain intervals. I am aware about the seal issues people have with synthetic and just wanted to see what everyones opinion is in here. It has 130k miles on it and doesn't burn any oil and doesn't leak any oil.

Well, I also have a 96 sentra 1.6L and I switched to synthetic at about 100k miles. No problems came about for me. The thing is though, you mentioned it being cheaper, BUT, it really is more expensive. As I'm sure you know, synthetic does cost considerably more. The label does say that you can wait longer before you change the oil because the oil won't start to break down for 15,000 miles or so depending on the brand. This is true, but you need to realize that regular petroleum oil doesn't start to break down until about 6,000 miles but it is still good to change at 2,500 or 3,000. The filter is what gets ya. Even with better oil, the filter still gets dirty and should be changed every 3,000. Now, I don't know about you, but it isn't worth it to me to try and change the filter and not oil, it just doesn't work good at all. Synthetic is definately a good thing to switch to, you can feel it in your engine. It seems to run so much smoother. Also, if you do decide to switch, keep in mind that it is a bad idea to switch back. Whatever you decide, stick with it.

Yes I do know the benefits of it, i was just wanted to see if anyone had any leaking problems when they switched. Yes it is cheaper for me to use Amsoil than petroleum based oils. Petroleum oil starts to break down after about 5000 miles but i wouldn't trust it being in there more than 2500. Well, duh the filter will get cloged, that i change at 3000. Ya just spin off the filter, and add the extra like 1/2 qt. I know all about switching back and that it is bad and so-on. I use amsoil in my lebaron also, and yes it is cheaper. My cars don't just get any oil, it has to be the best, thats why i use amsoil in them.

Not really, it just is the best oil to use. Tests have been done comparing it to other oils and it turned out to be the best. By the way, if you have to sell amsoil for a living then you aren't going to make it far cause it can be kept in the engine for so long.

synthetic oil will harden seals and potentially cause leaks in high mileage cars, but i havent witnessed it myself. i bought my SR20 sentra with 64k and switched to castrol syntec right away and it never leaked up till 125k when i got rear ended and it passed away(r.i.p.)
although the seals in that car were in amazingly good shape...

So do u think that it would cause leaks on a 96 with 135k on it? I just put synthetic oil in it today and it hasn't leaked. I also ran some engine cleaner in it before i put the oil in.

What kind of engine cleaner. Auto RX I hope it cleans slow without harm to the engine or oil. It also reconditions the seals so you can add the Amsoil and not worry. You may use some oil the first change but not to worry it is just cleaning up some more. After 5K then 10K on the second change I would get a oil report to be sure the engine is doing well at that time & mileage (1 year 10K miles).

Well, i used some stuff that the parts man gave me to use. You run it in the engine for like 10 min at idle before you change the oil. You drain it out and it pulls all of the gunk out of the engine. It was a little darker than usual so i'm guessing that it worked. The guy who gave it to me said that he used it in his truck before he put amsoil in it and his oil has 20k on it now and is just starting to turn dark. The amsoil says 1 year or 24k on a mechanically sound engine.
