I have a 1993 Grand Am GT with the 2.3L Quad-4 H.O., D.O.H.C.,
5-Speed. I bought the car and it had a blown head gasket and didnt run well at all. I replaced the head gasket and the head, water pump, starter, coilpack, spark plugs. After I finished, I went to start it and it would not start. I figured out it wasnt getting any fuel. I fixed that and now it runs badly and has a lot of white smoke coming out the exhaust manifold.
Is the engine bad or is it just that I havent hooked up the exhaust?
Oh, and I kinda broke one of the bolts for the water pump-to-block bolts. How do I get it out?
Any help would be great!

smoking is bad for you and your car. If you do a cylinder compression test you can tell if the compression is low,if its low then you know the rings are probley shot. Hav you changed the oil since you replaced the head? Water in the oil will cause some smoke too.
Now the water pump bolt might not be so simple. If its broke off inside(meaning you cant grab with vise gripes and screw out) then you will hav to drill a hole in the broken peice, so you can get an easy-out in it and remove the peice. This does suck, badly! When drilling you need to go slow and try not to drill into the threads on the block or where ever its at. Goul luck

Running the car without the exhaust hooked up can do valve damage as they tend to suck in cold air when you close the throttle. As for the broken bolt, they suck as there isn't alot of room on the back of the quads to do much work, if needed remove the timing chain housing and you can put the part on a bench, makes it alot easier for the drilling but it means removing the timing chain.

Its me again, I did change the oil after I replaced the head, but it sat for a while. Would that affect it any? And what if I sealed the waterpump with a sealant? Would there be too much pressure for it without that second bolt? Would the exhaust not being hooked up cause the engine to run rough?
