Can not program the key ,the light stays on never goes out...Is there any way I can correct this without taking to dealer? 1996 Pontiac GMC

Is this a Pontiac or a GMC? I am assuming that since you are posting in the Grand Am forum that this is a Pontiac Grand Am.
Now what is the problem?
What light will not go off?
Why are you programming the key?
