New Fuel filter

I've had a cold stalling problem and lack of power on my 91 1.6 Driver with the invincible 2e2 carb.
Following a carb tune up (by a pro for a price) things improved but the start (which is more todo with the car sitting for a day or two) didn't get any better, if I didn't keep the revs up high after starting she'd stutter and stall. I investigated what seemed like a fuel starvation and found that the fuel filter wasn't VW golf spec it was a generic from Halford (alarm), having installed the correct fuel filter (about 3 times the size) she's much happier.
The powers back but not alot of acceleration, she's a little fumey I think the carb needs re-adjusting to the new fuel input. How and where would I do this?
Would several more adjustments need to be made in conjunction?
Am I on the right path to making the car alittle more perky?

Have you had your timing checked? the problem may simply be that your timing is out or dodgy plugs, leads etc
