I heard they are having a similar problem getting Gold to match properly for the 50th anneversery edition. It has something to do with the different matereals. The car is a carbon composite material i believe and the bumpers are rubber and it has a different recation with the paint.:flash:

They managed colour matching with the old Pontiac endura-nosed cars, such as the 70s Firebird.
So the 50th aniversary car will be gold? Some guy in another topic says it is pearl white.

Not sure it was over a year ago that I heard they were attempting it. I know someone that saw a Gold painted C5 in a meusem and said they were working on it. But they may have given up on it because of the trouble it will take to do it. Of course we will not know until 2003;)
So it could be pearl white because I herad they were exploring other colors. But gold on perl white sounds disgusting.
Its probbably one of those big mysteries like what the new Z will finnaly look like. Nissan Z that is:D

Actually the body is fiberglass w/ urethane bumpers. The Electron Blue Looks good to me though...I just went to the assembly plant and saw quite a few.

Realy,
before I bought one I could have swore I heard that the C5 was not fiberglass, and that they were a composite material similar to what they use on Saturns. It doesent feal like fiberglass to me. I have a friend with a C$ and evrything on that car seems different. although I havent had the pleasure of scratching the paint off to find out. Maybee NGMRBMAN knows.
I would like to know for sure because it will annoy me now thinking my car is FG.

The Corvette body panels are molded from SMC...Sheet Molded Compound. Indeed they are the same as the Saturn. In fact the C5 is built exactly like a Saturn. (Sub frame with SMC panels hung from them). The SMC panels really don't add any strength to the platform but are just "covers" for the chassis. Now, as for fiberglass or not, The SMC panels are indeed a fiberglass composite product but die pressed instead of hand laid like some of the panels on previous generation Corvettes.

The C5 is a plastic resin but does have some glass in it so you can call it fiberglass and be correct!
As for the Anniversary cars, all I've heard is that the Indy 500 pace car will be a good representation of what you might call an "anniversary" C5 and it will be a dark metallic red. There will be no more Magnetic Red after May 30. Also as far asa anniversary models are concerned, I have also heard that EVERY 03 will wear 50th badging! Well see soon! :)

the corvette is made of FRP (fiber reinforced plastic). which can be any number of fibers of which glass is included. the resin can be either polyester, vinylester, or epoxy. given the relative cost of the three more than likely the corvette is made of glass reinforced polyester resin.
