I've got a buddy with a '98 Sierra and we're both trying to figure out if it is a C or a K. How do you figure it out?

2x4 (two wheel drive) is a "C"
4x4 (four wheel drive) is a "K"

if you cant tell just by looking at the interior and seeing if there is 4x4, you can look underneath and if there is a transfer case, driveshaft to the front of the truck, and a front differential, it is, of course, a 4x4.

older 4x4's have a regular axle up front like the rear one, just with an off-centered differential, and newer models (not sure when it started, maybe 1999?) have an independent front suspension just like the 2x4 with cv joints like a front wheel drive car would have. more than likely it is probably a "k" as many people get that option now, even though it hinders mileage slightly because of added weight even when not engaged and added rotational mass when engaged

I think it started in 87 or 88. I have a 90 K1500 and it has IFS.

right, the first year for IFS was 1988, it was introduced as a new feature on the redesigned GM Trucks.
