Rotten Egg Smell

I have a very bad smell when I step on the gas. It smells just like rotten eggs. I was told that I need to greese the muffler bearings. Because they were low on greese the bearsings were getting hot and that was the smell.

Could this be the problem? and if so were would I find the bearings?

Rotten egg smells is usually either very rich fuel mixture (hows your MPG lately?) or a plugged catalytic converter.

   :evillol: :evillol: :evillol: :screwy: :screwy:

I just wanted to see what you people would say...

I know that it is my catalytic converter . What I don't know is this...??? Is there anyway that I can fix the problem with it being clogged.

Could I take it off and cram a broom stick or something thou it?
Or would this hurt the preformance of the car?
Or should I just replace it?

Thanks
Dave

Could I take it off and cram a broom stick or something thou it?Yeah sure. That might do it. :shakehead

The inside of the cat is like a honeycomb with fairly small passageways. These can get plugged up over time if your car is not well maintained, essentially cutting off the flow of exhaust through the converter. As Jayson said there is no way to really clean it other then replacing it. Besides, even if there was, you'd have to cut the old converter out and reinstall it. Is it really worth all that effort and not have it fix your problem when for $75 you could just buy a new one?

Mine had the same problem about two months ago. I took a hammer and beat the crap out of my cat. Which don't ever do. But I went and had to buy a new cat. I got the magnaflow from gravana tuning. It's $75, but sounds really nice.

I would have also suggested teh clutch going. But, you cannot save yourself when you said 'muffler bearings' and how would a cat do ANYTHING if it was a straight through? But go nuts. If you are getting a new cat just snag one off of E-bay, cheap and they work.

Yes, it's easy to get us going, almost TOO easy!

Yes, I know muffler's don't have bearings, that was just hilarious.

I was more worried about the valve stem lube.... Should I change it too?

So I need
New muffler bearings
Heallight fuild needs checked
Change Valve stem lube.
And check the oil pressure in the tires.

:screwy: :banghead:

Oh man, don't overlook the most simplest of simples! (Which every mechanic always overlooks) Check the coolant to your tires! What do you think prevents them from getting too hot and melting?

I am unfamiliar with the term valve stem, is it where one mounts a breather filter? Because if so, my cousin's has lube on it, it was really big and the filter wouldnt slide on easily on his 4g63.

Ok this might be going a little bit too far on things you should check. But some people have been having problems with the gas for there power windows and locks. Try and get that filled to see if the windows will go up faster and down faster and the locks locking faster.

Wow, this thread is amazing, I never thought about these things. Don't forget to oil your gas pedal so it doesn't get stuck when you floor it. I hope nobody takes this thread seriously, imagine some people putting oil in their tires, sticking grease in their muffler, and adding coolant to their headlights. LMAO!

Does the Engine have a misfire? The smell of rotten eggs is usually cause by a rich fuel mixure or a misfire. You need to make sure the engine i running properly before replacing the cat.

When I had to replace my cat, my car wouldn't shift outta 1st gear, so I couldn't go no where. It was clogged, and ya smelt horribly awful. I think that it's all summed up that, you need a new cat. Maybe the one you have now is shedding too much or poops all over the place.

Sorry, I got out of hand. I just thought i'd put a little humor into my post. Def go wtih a non OEM. SOunds way better and flows more!
