2001 TDI Air Conditioner

I have a 2001 TDI beetle, that I recently re-aquired from my mom. It has 60000 miles on it. It had all the scheduled maintanence, up to the 50000 mile check-up. It has had all the normal kinks repaired, the window track slipping, the chime relay being replaced, the gas cover switch replaced and the emergency brake handle replaced. She lives out in the country and let it sit for about 6 months without driving it or anything. When she gave it back to me, the air conditioner was not working. I checked under the hood and the fabric that is under the hood protecting the engine was shredded, probably from a mouse. When you turn the air on full blast with the top vents open, they will only blow a little warm air, the floor vents however will blow full blast. I have changed the vent setting from defrost to floor only to a mix and nothing will make the upper vents blow fast air. Also, it is not blowing cold air at all. There is no smell in the vent, so I know the animal didn't crawl in there and die, and before she gave me my car back, the air conditioner was blowing cold air, just not hard. Please help me, I live in Texas and it is HOT!!! Thanks a bunch.

You do have furry friends in the dash. On beetles little furry friends can access the dash from the outside. You will need to remove the dash pannels to see where it made a home (most likely by the pollen filter on the passenger pannel.

One big question is does the A/C light come on & does the compressor clutch engage? If so then I'd check all the little vacuum hoses in the engine compartment also.
